The Cheaper Home Batteries Program, offering a 30% discount on solar battery installations, is now available in Australia. This program, part of the expansion to the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), provides rebates for batteries connected to new or existing solar PV systems. The discount is available for battery systems with a usable capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh, with the discount amount decreasing annually until 2030.

Discount: Around 60% off the upfront cost of installation.
Eligibility: Available to households, small businesses, and community organizations.
System Size: Applies to battery systems with a usable capacity between 5 kWh and 50 kWh for both residential and commercial installations.
Connection: Can be connected to new or existing solar PV systems.
Implementation: Delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
Timeline: The program officially began on July 1, 2025.
Discount Reduction: The subsidy amount will decrease each year until 2030.
Potential Savings: GEV reports that the federal rebate for a 25kWh Battery Box could be up to $7000.
Combination with State Schemes: The federal rebate can be combined with existing state and territory battery incentives, such as the WA rebate.
Victoria’s Solar Homes Program: Victoria also offers a solar battery loan, which can be combined with the federal rebate.
Victoria’s Hot Water Rebate: The Victorian Government also offers a rebate for energy-efficient solar or heat pump hot water systems.
